The spa district
Kochbrunnen, casino and Kurhaus become more than scenery: they form a map of wealth, memory and concealed movement.
A Wiesbaden crime novel by Rylan Hudson
In Wiesbaden, the past does not disappear. It waits beneath the steam.
A dead man in the hot water. A key marked Room Twelve. And a trail that leads deep into Wiesbaden’s history.

The story
When Chief Inspector René Neudt finds a drowned croupier at the Kochbrunnen, the case first looks like a robbery gone wrong.
But the dead man is carrying a casino receipt for €84,000 – and a clue that points far beyond the elegant spa district. Together with his colleague Jan Bandtke, René follows a trail through missing files, sealed rooms and a secret reaching back to 1998.
Kochbrunnen, casino and Kurhaus become more than scenery: they form a map of wealth, memory and concealed movement.
A small object opens a much larger case, linking the present investigation to sealed rooms and missing files.
As the past comes into focus, power, silence and loyalty begin to ask the same unsettling question.
A spoiler-free reading preview
A short atmospheric preview created for this website. It is an editorial introduction, not a verbatim manuscript extract.
The steam rose from the Kochbrunnen and swallowed the streetlights one by one.
René Neudt stood at the edge of the water, watching the city dissolve into pale ribbons. Behind him, the first police lights painted the wet pavement blue. Ahead, the fountain kept running as if nothing had happened.
On the stone beside the body lay a key. Its brass surface was dark with age, but the stamped words were still clear: Room Twelve.
He had seen the name before. Not in a report. Not in a witness statement. It belonged to a file that had disappeared in 1998 – a file that someone had spent nearly three decades making sure would stay closed.
René looked toward the Kurhaus, where the last guests were leaving beneath gold-lit windows. Wiesbaden had always known how to keep its secrets elegant.
